Book Clubs

Books and Belonging.

Books are better when shared. Our book clubs bring people of all ages together to read, reflect, and connect. From thought-provoking book discussions and social justice conversations to game nights and block parties, our programming creates space for curiosity, creativity, and community. Whether you’re joining a club, attending a gathering, or just dropping in, there’s always a place for you here.

  • Learn hand mending and patching at ABC! Do you have holes in jeans, jackets, tote bags or other fabric goods? Let us help you extend the life of your workwear or sentimental items by patching your clothing. All ability levels welcome: from absolute beginner who has never threaded a needle before to quilting pros. We will provide basic supplies (needles, thread, patches, and pins) and instruction to get started on your mending journey. In the middle of a project? Bring it along and sew with company! Nothing to repair? Bring a totebag and make a patch for a pocket!

  • This club meets once a month and explores various journal prompts to reflect, connect, and be in community. Whether you have experience or this is your first time putting pen to paper, you are welcome to join this brave community of people!

  • This club meets once a month to prioritize wellness, mental health, and community. We read and discuss books related to mindfulness and meditation in all its forms followed by a short meditation. Even if you did not read the book, come! Everyone needs some mindfulness and meditation!

  • This club reads books that have been challenged or removed from schools, libraries, and circulation due to the censorship of race, sexuality, gender identity, mental health, class, and social justice topics. By reading these books, we refuse to let the voices and experiences of marginalized writers and communities be silenced. All are welcome!

  • This club meets the second Tuesday of every month and is led by our friends at Project Write Now. Join us for a fun evening of storytelling, conversation, and community! Using creative prompts, we generate new writing and share our work. Outside pieces are welcome too. They must be your own work, 500 words or less, and align with PWN’s mission to provide a supportive environment. Come read, write and listen! Your story matters and we want to hear it!

If you would like to read, please email info@projectwritenow.org to be added to the list of readers

We read fiction and nonfiction books that reflects the wide spectrum of LGBTQ+ identities and experiences, including race, gender, sexuality, age, and history. Our picks spark thoughtful conversations, honor queer joy and grief, and highlight the art and resilience woven through every story. Everyone is welcome, but this space is created first and foremost for queer folks to feel seen, safe, and celebrated.

  • Hadal Zone is a science fiction, fantasy, and fantasy book club that takes its name from the deepest, darkest region of the ocean. Just as the hadal zone represents the furthest reaches of the ocean’s depths, our book club seeks to explore the outer limits of the speculative fiction genres. We dive deep into the most imaginative and thought-provoking works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror literature. Whether you’re a longtime fan of these genres or a newcomer looking to explore new literary depths, Hadal Zone is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the fantastic and the unknown

  • The Young Adult Book Club meets monthly to discuss books that highlight the intensity and awkwardness of adolescence with humor and heart. We read fun (and oftentimes unputdownable!) books about mostly BIPOC, queer, disabled and/or otherwise diverse teens by authors who aren’t afraid to experiment with funky forms and daring voices. People of all ages are welcome, but this is above all a safe space where teens and young adults are especially encouraged to attend.

  • For the Thrill is a book club for anyone who lives for those jaw-dropping twists, heart-pounding moments, and late-night page-turning sessions. Each month, we dive into edge-of-your-seat reads across the thriller spectrum, from gritty murder mysteries and gripping crime stories to chilling psychological suspense and everything in between. All are welcome!

  • From Pride and Prejudice to The Great Gatsby and Jane Eyre, these are the stories we’ve all heard of (and maybe even spark-noted), but when’s the last time you really sat down and read one? Each month, we revisit (or discover for the first time) the books that history remembers as the greatest must-reads of all time. All are welcome!

  • This is the place to share the work of those poets who have rocked your mind. It’s an easy club to participate in. There are no assigned texts. Rather, each participant will bring a poetry book they’ve been enjoying recently, and read a poem from it. Any genre/style is welcome. The only rule is you can’t bring any of your own work.

  • If you are a lover of independent publishing houses, or simply looking for something new, this is the book club for you! Each month, we dive into a book from indie authors and publishing houses. These picks feature up-and-coming authors, literary veterans working outside the traditional publishing industry, and books from small presses across the globe. All are welcome!

  • Come draw together to our monthly theme. All levels welcome! Art supplies provided, just bring a sketchbook.

We provide markers, colored pencils, watercolor, and collage materials. Feel free to bring art supplies to share. Bring your own food and drink if you'd like.

Book Club FAQs

Do I need to sign up for a book club?

Nope, just show up!

Can I participate in multiple book clubs?

Of course! We encourage you to participate in as many book clubs as your heart desires!

Do I have to come to every book club meeting?

Nope! You can attend as many or as few meetings as you would like.

How long are book clubs?

Book clubs start promptly at their start time and typically last an hour. They may be a little shorter or longer depending on how chatty your club is!

Do I need to buy the book at ABC to participate in a book club?

Nope! We have copies of each month’s book club picks in-store in the Book Clubs section for purchase. You can also order a physical book, e-book, or audiobook through ABC! However, if you already have a copy or borrow one, that’s great, too!

What if I don’t finish the book in time? Or didn’t read the book at all?

Come anyway if you’re interested in the club! Book club is the best way to make lifelong bookish friends. Just be prepared for spoilers!

What if I read the book a while ago?

Great, come to the meeting!

What should I bring to book club?

For most of our clubs, you just have to bring yourself! Some people like to bring a copy of their book to reference or a notebook, but it is not necessary. Some clubs (like Lunar Flowers and the Journal Club) do require some materials. Read the description of the club above for details about any required materials.

What should I expect at my first book club?

When you arrive, you can find a seat in the circle. Each book club has a facilitator who will kick off the meeting with a round of introductions. You can expect to see some new and returning faces each time! After introductions, the facilitator will guide the group through some questions to spark conversation. Along the way, other book club members may pose their own questions to the group. You can choose to participate in the group conversation as much or as little as you would like! We are a safe space for yappers and introverts alike. 🙂
